Bharatanatyam, with its rich tradition of expressive storytelling, provides a unique medium to explore and communicate the complexities of the climate crisis. Traditionally, Bharatanatyam has been used to depict timeless emotions through its intricate mudras (gestures) and abhinaya (expressions). In Ikshana, these classical techniques are reimagined to tell a story that speaks to contemporary issues. This performance challenges the boundaries of this ancient art form, using it to engage with the pressing realities of today.
Ikshana honors the rich heritage of Bharatanatyam while evolving it to tackle modern challenges. The narrative and choreography were inspired by key works, including Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, The Speaking Tree by Shel Silverstein, and Nero’s Guests by Deepa Bhatia, among others.
